2022 Honda Grom | First Look Review
Since its launch in 2014, the loveable Honda Grom has maneuvered its way into the hearts and garages of over 750,000 riders and popularized Big Red’s miniMoto line, which includes the Monkey, Super Cub C125 and Trail 125. Presented as an early model-year release in the United States, the 2022 Honda Grom is boasting some serious updates, with a new 124cc engine, a 5-speed gearbox and a whole new look — but the price still starts at an affordable $3,399.
Straight out of the gate, it’s easy to tell that Honda’s design team had a field day redesigning the Grom, which now has cleaner lines and a more conventional appearance. The Grom is a hotbed for customization, and Honda designers have answered that call with six large bolts to pop the side panels and tank covers off, letting owners work on their mini-steeds quickly. All-around LED lighting is standard, and the updated Grom rolls on 12-inch wheels with a fresh five-spoke design.
A flatter and marginally shorter 30-inch tall seat replaces precious Grom’s stepped seat, allowing better movement in the saddle. Ditching the bi-level seat necessitated a new subframe, but the steel frame is retained. Meanwhile, the fuel tank has grown from 1.45 gallons to 1.59 gallons. Even with the increased fuel tank capacity, Honda engineers use the space beneath the body panels to hide the Grom’s fuel injection and other electronic bits.
Color options are Queen Bee Yellow, Matte Black Metallic, Pearl White (SP) on non-ABS models, while the Grom ABS is offered in Candy Blue. The Pear White (SP) colorway boasts awesome racing-inspired graphics, a yellow shock spring and gold brake calipers, a gold fork and gold wheels.
Also new to the party is an updated LCD instrument panel with a rev counter and gear indicator.
Coming in just shy of the 125cc mark, the redesigned 123.9cc (if you want to be exact) two-valve air-cooled single-cylinder engine features a claimed 9.7 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 7.7 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm, according to European specifications. The bore is now 50.0mm, and the stroke is 63.1mm. As you might have guessed, the 2022 Grom meets Euro 5 emissions standards.
More big news for the little Grom is a 5-speed transmission with a wider gear ratio spread. Coupled with that is an update to the final-drive gearing, with the same 15-tooth sprocket in the front and a larger 38-tooth sprocket in the rear.
When it comes to suspenders, the 31mm fork and monoshock return to the fold.
A 2-piston caliper with a 220mm disc handle braking duties up front and a 1-piston caliper accompanied by a 190mm rotor in the rear. ABS is optional ($200) and features an IMU. Honda claims that non-ABS models tip the scale at a minuscule 227 pounds wet. ABS adds 4 pounds.
